Shoprite calls off JV with Nirmal lifestyle

Shoprite Holdings, the South Africa-based retail heavyweight has called off its franchisee deal in India with real estate developer, Nirmal Lifestyle Group, top officials close to the development said. Kishore Biyani led Future Group is now buying out Shoprite's single hypermarket in Mumbai with its existing employees to set up a food store which will be rebranded as Food Republic.

Vishal Retail's Ambeek Khemka resigns

Taking the industry circles by surprise, city-based Vishal Retail on Wednesday said its Group President Ambeek Khemka has resigned from the company. The development comes at a time when the retail major's lenders are undertaking a debt restructuring programme to revive the company's financial situation.

Subhiksha takes a cash-&-carry path

Debt-ridden retailer Subhiksha Trading Services Ltd will begin its second innings on Wednesday, when it will reopen its first store in Chennai. However, this time around the organisation will operate as a cash-and-carry model. "Subhiksha's model will be different this time around and will not directly engage with customers," said an industry source.

UK consultant Gleeds has won a contract as programme manager for the roll out of new Marks and Spencer stores in India. The new stores will be located in shopping malls across the country and will each cover around 20,000 sq ft.
