Woolworths sees fresh hope in India

Retail analysts in Australia have raised the prospect of Woolworths establishing other Indian wholesale businesses, possibly in grocery or general merchandise, similar to the Croma joint venture in electronics retailing.

Foodworld committed to Indian market

Foodworld now operates over 67 supermarket stores across Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad, and plans to expand to about 200 Foodworld domestic stores in different formats such as hypermarkets, supermarkets, express stores and concept stores by the end of the year.


Hypercity to open 10 stores by 2011

Hypercity Retail India Limited, part of the K Raheja Group, is planning to set up ten stores by 2011, each with an investment of about Rs 30 crore. Each store would be spread over 1,00,000 sft, said B S Nagesh, Hypercity vice-chairman at the launch of its first store in Hyderabad on Friday.

Mystic Cures Pvt Ltd, a part of the $400 million Delhi-based Kassa India group, plans to acquire seven spas in Europe and Africa soon. The company will spend around Rs 654 crore (100 million euros) for acquisitions, a top executive told VCCircle. The funds for acquisition will be raised from private equity firms.

Consumer goods prices may take a year to fall

Retail prices of consumer products and services may take a year to cool down, says an ETIG study based on historical trends. The study analysed 15 years' data of the relative movement of the consumer price index (CPI), which tracks items and services such as fruit, vegetables, household items and house rents for industrial workers (IW), and the wholesale price index (WPI), which tracks wholesale prices of articles such as oil, machinery, food articles, minerals, metals etc.
