The Gourmet Foods market
India lives simultaneously in 400 years, as a famous author once said. While on the one hand, you have retailers struggling to figure out how to reach the masses, the growth of high-end gourmet stores such as Nature's Basket illustrates the potential in tapping the higher-end customer. The success of such concepts lies in carrying a wide range of differentiated products and providing a superior customer experience. The well-travelled and sophisticated Indian customer segment is small but wealthy. They are also ready to purchase as long as the product quality and range is good. It is important to take care of these customers as they form the 'core' customer base for such concepts. The 'wealthy but uninitiated' and the 'aspiring' customer segments are larger, but need more effort to be converted into customers. It is the retailer's job to educate this customer on how they can enhance their lifestyle through use of their products (through live kitchen demonstrations, sampling, complementary offers such as cookbooks and DVDs and other services that complement the sale of their products). Retailing in this segment is as much about educating as it is about selling.

Arthur D Little

Little proposes an integrated approach to Retail Performance Management (RPM).
