Pantaloon, Shoppers Stop see bright year ahead

Riding on improved consumer sentiment, Pantaloon Retail and Shoppers Stop, the countrys biggest listed retalers, see 10-12 per cent and five-seven per cent growth, respectively, in same-store sales (SSS) in 2010-11. While Shoppers Stop had SSS growth of three per cent in FY2010, Pantaloon Retail is likely to have growth of 11-12 per cent. Its financial year ends on June 30.
Arvind Brands to take Cherokee, Arrow to West Asia, S Africa

Arvind Brands, the Bangalore-based apparel retailer, is looking to take the Cherokee brand to West Asia as well as license the Arrow line in South Africa this year. The company is the sole Indian licensee for Cherokee, an American value brand, which is retailed through its Megamart stores. Arvind will soon retail Cherokee through departmental stores in Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, Egypt and Bahrain.

Italian baby care brand Chicco will start sourcing apparel and shoes from India for its sales as well as for global operations. The sourcing will be done by tapping departmental and pharmacy chains. The brand has an exclusive outlet in New Delhi and plans to expand its retail operation to 10 exclusive stores across the country by 2011.The brand is a part of Italian health and wellness products major Artsana SPA.

High prices in the run-up to the Akshaya Trithya festival this year may yet again dent retail gold sales in India despite this being the most auspicious time on the Hindu calendar for buying the yellow metal, jewelers said. According toRajiv Popley, director at Popley Group, a large jewelry chain, there is little chance of domestic prices falling below 17,000 rupees/10 grams. The only supportive factor for gold is a rising rupee which has limited the impact of higher international prices.
Selling of expired food products: TN Government warns Multi National Companies

The Tamil Nadu government has warned of stern action against multinational companies, running supermarkets and others who distributed and sold expired food products in the state. Replying to a Special Call Attention on expired goods, especially food items being sold in the retail and supermarkets, Food Minister E V Velu told the State Assembly that action would be taken against both under the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act, 1954.
