Future Group, Carrefour ink retail alliance

After years of negotiations with more than a dozen potential Indian partners, Europe’s biggest retailer Carrefour SA has forged an alliance with Kishore Biyani’s Future Group, which runs India’s largest store chain, according to two persons familiar with the development. Future Group will open Carrefour-branded franchise stores in the country under a deal signed three months ago, said the two persons, who spoke on condition of anonymity.Future Group plans to open between 150 and 300 Carrefour-branded hypermarkets in the next five years, said one of the two persons.





Pantaloon forms JV with UK shoemaker C & J Clark

Pantaloon Retail, India’s largest listed retailer, today announced the setting up of a 50:50 joint venture with UK-based shoe manufacturer C & J Clark International. The joint venture would also engage in wholesaling of Clark’s branded footwear and associated products in India, Pantaloon Retail said in a statement. C & J Clark is one of the largest makers of casual shoes in the world.





Future Group ropes in realtor Sumit Dabriwala for Future Mall Management

Kishore Biyani plans to make a strong entry into real estate development through Pantaloon Retail’s recently demerged subsidiary that will consolidate all the land holdings of his family, a person familiar with the development said. The Future Group CEO has roped in Kolkata-based realtor Sumit Dabriwala of Bellani Group into the new company, Future Mall Management, which will develop commercial and residential properties as well as modern wholesale and retail spaces.







Dubai’s biggest gold retailer plans expansion

Dubai might have been founded on the pearl trade, but it’s now a key centre for the gold trade too. As the country’s biggest gold retailer, Pure Gold is expanding into Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain. It is also investing $200m to open 200 stores across India.





Mangalore: SPAR India Introduces Hyper Market in City

SPAR India opened its hyper market spread over an area of about 44,000 sq ft at City Mall on K S Rao Road in Mangalore, on April 30. Inspector General of Police (western range), Gopal Hosur, inaugurated the hyper market, which is stated to be the first store of international standard in the district.

McDonald’s may bring India McCafe coffee shop by 2012

Fast food chain McDonald’s today said it plans to bring its globally renowned McCafe, the chain of coffee shop within its outlets, into India by 2012. The move is aimed at tapping the estimated over Rs 1,000 crore organised retail coffee chain market.





Barista Lavazza to expand its ’liqueur coffee’ concept

Italian coffee chain Lavazza today said it will extend the concept of serving coffee with alcohol -liqueur coffee -in more outlets, as it looks to enhance its position in the estimated Rs 1,000 crore organised retail cafe market in India. At present, Lavazza’s ’liqueur coffee’ is available at only one Barista Lavazza outlet in the capital. It now plans to take the number of outlets serving it to 25-30 by next year.

To cater to an increasing tribe of discount shoppers... at least eight firms have opened shop in the past six months, offering discount coupons online or through phone messages, according to Tony Navin, co-founder of Bangalore-based Grabbon, a firm that started business in November. These start-ups typically enter into agreements with retailers and offer discount coupons that could be printed from their websites or be sent to customers’ mobile phones as messages, which then can be redeemed at various stores.
