New FDI norms: Bharti-Wal-Mart, Tata-Tesco JVs in a spot

New rules on foreign direct investment in wholesale trade have caused consternation among Indian business houses with big plans for retail, such as Sunil Mittal’s Bharti and the Tatas and their partners, global giants like Wal-Mart and Tesco. The guidelines have also disrupted plans by India’s largest retailer Kishore Biyani to team up with French company Carrefour for a foray into wholesale trading, also known as cash & carry.

Monginis to foray into health foods

Monginis Foods, the pastry, cake and general bakery chain owned by the Khorakiwala family, is all set to foray into the health food segment. "As starters, we are looking at low-fat, high-fibre cookies and low-calorie ready-to-eat items," Virendra Ghole, Marketing Manager, Monginis, said. The popular cake-pastry-savouries brand is also gearing up to offer new services like online cake gifting.

Pizza chain to open shop in city

Gama Hospitality Pvt Ltd, the Kolkatta-based company that entered into a master franchisee pact with Swiss firm Global Franchise Architects, which operates 11 brands in 14 countries, plans to open at least three Pizza Corner restaurants by June-end and take the count to nearly a dozen by April 2011. The company plans to invest Rs 30-35 crore in 35 outlets across at least six brands in a year’s time.





Nikasu plans two food processing units at Uttarakhand, Jharkhand

Kochi-based ready-to-eat manufacturer and exporter, Nikasu Frozen Foods, has earmarked a Rs30-crore investment to set up two food processing units in Uttaranchal and Jharkhand, a top company official said. Presently, Nikasu sells its products in Reliance Fresh and Aditya Birla’s ’More’ stores in Kochi. By next month, however, its products will be made available in all Reliance Fresh outlets across the country.

Court fines Bata Stores for using plastic bags

Taking a serious note of the environmental hazards posed by plastic bags, a city court has slapped footwear major Bata Shoe Stores with a fine of Rs one lakh for using the banned item in violation of rules.The courtalso directed the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) to utilise the penalty money for distribution of bio-degradable bags among small shopkeepers to create awarness about the eco-friendly steps
