Chennai Super Kings eyes Rs 1 cr from product sale

Godrej Industries, Spencer's to expand gourmet business

Even as general organized retailers try to consolidate or face closure under the impact of the economic downturn, at least two chains are looking to expand their gourmet retail businesses to new cities. Nature's Basket Ltd, a division of Godrej Industries Ltd plans to open another 15 stores in the next two years. Spencer's Retail Ltd, plans to open 20 more such sections in its stores across the supermarket and hypermarket formats in the next two years.

Hypercity Retail (India) Ltd, one of India's finest hypermarket chain, has launched its outlet in Amritsar. The 1,00,000 square feet store is situated at AlphaOne mall, Amritsar. Currently, there are six HyperCity outlets in India covering six lakh square feet of retail space. The first Hypercity store opened in Mumbai in May 2006.

This case examines the market entry of the UK's largest retailer (Tesco) into the USA. Tesco's launch of a new brand - Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Markets - in virgin territory is a bold move, notwithstanding the firm's considerable success with its overseas investment strategy (which within ten years has resulted in more than 50% of the firm's operating space being outside its 'home' market). The paper suggests that Tesco's US experiment is unusual both in terms of the innovatory aspects of its market entry and the reversal in that conventional direction of knowledge transfer. The Fresh & Easy story is then examined in terms of ten 'dimensions of innovation' involved in the market entry
