Shoprite buy may push Future-Carrefour deal

The buyout of South Africa's Shoprite Holdings single retail store in Mumbai by the Future group on Saturday, could well pave the way for stronger ties with French retail giant Carrefour, with whom the Future group has been in talks with for a while. Though ''the government's strict limits on foreign investments in the retail sector is playing spoilsport and has delayed many mergers, talks with the retail major have moved to the last mile,'' said an official, familiar with the deal.





'Tier-I and II cities will drive our growth'

Van Heusen, the apparel brand owned by the Aditya Birla Groups' Madura Garments, with a near 15% share of the branded shirts market in the country, expects to increase its business by about 30% to around Rs 500 crore in 2010-11. Shital Kumar Mehta, COO, Van Heusen, said. The firm intends to launch jeans under its VDot brand.

Amway to open around 170 outlets in India within 5 yrs

US-based FMCG firm Amway has plans to open around 170 outlets across the country in next five years, a top company official said. "We plan to take the number of outlets in India to 300 in the next five years, against the 130 at present," Managing Director, Amway, William S Pinckney said, while inaugurating the company's second brand assessment centre in Ahmedabad.





Tesco brands available in India

Products from the stable of the world's third largest retailer, Tesco, have entered the Indian consumer market through Trent, the retailing arm of the Tatas. Tesco has an exclusive franchisee agreement with Trent. About 50-odd private brands, including Tesco Value, Daisy and All About Men, of Tesco are being sold through Trent's hypermarket chain, Star Bazaar.

Future Group buys SA's Shoprite, renames it Foodrite

The Kishore Biyani-led Future Group bought the lone India franchisee store of South Africa's biggest grocery chain, Shoprite Holding, and renamed it Foodrite. "We always wanted to have a large format store dedicated only for food and so we took over the Shoprite store," Future Group's Customer Director, Damodar Mall, said.
