Pantaloon Retail drives growth with private labels

In what seems to be coun ter-intuitive, private label br ands of Pantaloon Retail (I ndia) have been helping ki ck-start growth in categories such as breakfast cereal, so ups and toothbrushes. PRIL plans to tie up with big branded firms to exclusively launch some of their new offerings through its outlets. It will also be coming out with new product of its own private label brands to keep customers excited.





M&S's Rose Sees India, China Key to Overseas Growth

Marks & Spencer Group Plc Executive Chairman, Stuart Rose said India and China will be key markets as the largest U.K. clothing retailer expands overseas. International growth "is going to be a long-term journey," Rose said in London. India is "ideally suited to the M&S demographic," he said.





Bharti Retail enters Rajasthan

Sunil Mittal-promoted Bharti Retail entered Rajasthan by launching the state's first compact-hyper store 'easyday Market' in Jaipur. The company currently has 63 stores in cities across Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and New Delhi.





Bata India profit (PBT) grows by 67% in Q4, 2009, Revenues grow by 13%

Bata India Limited, the largest retailer and the leader in the footwear market in India, declared its best ever financial results for the quarter ending December 31, 2009, with a growth of 66.9% in Profit Before Tax (PBT) at Rs. 3,865.8 lacs against Rs. 2,316.9 lacs in the same period last year. The Company's net turnover grew by 12.9% at Rs. 28,809.0 lacs as against Rs. 25,522.5 lacs in the same period last year.







Odyssey opens SIS at Easyday Market

Chennai-based Odyssey India Ltd, leisure store chain, opened a shop-in-shop (SIS) store measuring 1,200 square feet at EasyDay Market (a joint venture between Bharti enterprises and Wal-Mart), at Mahagun Metro Mall, Ghaziabad. The SIS will exclusively retail books.

DLF converts Mumbai mall project into residential one

DLF, the country's largest realtor by market value, is planning to build a premium residential apartment complex at Worli in Mumbai, instead of a high-end mall project, as demand for retail spaces has come down sharply, according to a company executive.

Consumers across the country may not have any respite from high food prices in the near future, even as the economy is expected to return to the high growth path quickly. Just three days after President Pratibha Patil admitted to the "unhappy pressure" on food prices, the annual Economic Survey presented in Parliament on Thursday conceded that the already high food prices could further increase over the next few months.
